Announcement – Emily Newsom win P.O.E. Scholar Award for 2015-2016

Congratulations to Emily Newsom for being selected as one of the 85 awardees for the Philanthropic Educational Organization Scholar Award for 2015-2016. Established in 1991, the P.E.O. Scholar Award is a merit-based award for women in the United States and Canada who are pursuing a doctoral-level degree at an accredited college or university.

The P.E.O. Sisterhood was founded in 1869 as a philanthropic educational organization with the goal of increasing higher education opportunities for women.

Postdoc Fellowship – Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics (CEED), University of Oslo, Norway

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Geology/Geophysics/Geodynamics

Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics (CEED)

Up to five Postdoc fellowships (3 years period) are available at the Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics (CEED), a Centre of Excellence located at the University of Oslo and funded by The Research Council of Norway (2013 to 2023).

CEED is dedicated to research of fundamental importance to the understanding of our planet, which embraces the dynamics of the plates, the origin of large scale volcanism, the evolution of climates and the abrupt demise of life forms. This ambitious venture will hopefully result in a new Earth model that explains how mantle processes interact with plate tectonics and trigger massive volcanism and associated environmental and climate changes throughout Earth history.

CEED activities are organized within six sections or scientific themes: (1) Dynamic Earth: Plate motions and Earth history, (2) Deep Earth: Materials, structure and dynamics, (3) Earth Crises: LIPs, mass extinctions and environmental changes, (4) Earth and Beyond: Comparative Planetology, (5) Earth modelling: Numerical models of Earth Dynamics and (6) Earth Laboratory: Paleomagnetism and Rock Magnetism.

Please mark your application with the relevant scientific theme. Experience within one or several of these themes are required and examples of specific research fields are listed below:

  • Structure, evolution, and dynamics of the Earth’s interior
  • Comparison of seismologic and geodynamic mantle models
  • Phase relations and mineral physics of deep Earth materials by ab initio atomistic simulations
  • Deep mantle plumes, lithospheric heterogeneities and continental break-up
  • Supercontinents, climate and life evolution
  • Slab subduction, collision and palaeo-topography
  • Integrating plate reconstructions with numerical models of mantle dynamics
  • Large Igneous Provinces and the formation of volcanic ash deposits
  • Contact metamorphic petrology and gas generation
  • Biogeochemical cycle modelling, long-term climate trends and paleoenvironmental reconstructions
  • Surface and interior dynamic processes of planetary bodies, including exoplanets
  • Planetary system evolution, planetary time-scales, surface ages, impact cratering and cratering statistics
  • Paleomagnetism and its applications to plate tectonics
  • Fundamental rock and mineral magnetism

Qualifications:

Applicants must hold a PhD in geology/geophysics/physics (or equivalent). Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

Personal Qualities Required:

  • High working capacity
  • Excellent collaborative skills and ability to work in a team
  • High-level oral and written English skills
  • Strong dedication and a high degree of self-motivation

Salary:

Position code 1352, Pay Grade: 57 – 65 (NOK 482 800 to 559 600 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority).

The application should include:

  • Letter of application and a full CV.
  • List of publications.
  • Short outline of future research plans and how this can be integrated with or expanding ongoing CEED research activities (see http://www.mn.uio.no/ceed/english/research/).
  • Statements/documentation of relevant experience.
  • Names and contact details of 2-3 references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and telephone number).
  • Please remember that all documents should be in English or a Scandinavian language.
  • The application with attachments must be delivered in our electronic recruiting system EasyCruit from the link on the bottom of the page.

General Requirements:

In accordance with the University of Oslo’s equal opportunities policy, we invite applications from all interested individuals regardless of gender or ethnicity.

The University of Oslo has an agreement for all employees aiming to secure rights to research results: http://www.uio.no/english/for-employees/employment/position/intellectual-rights/

Closing date for applications: 1 July 2015. Starting date as soon as possible.

UW CubeSat Team Crowd Sourcing

Hello Everybody,

The UW CubeSat Team is a great group of undergrads and grads trying to get a student-built project on the Moon. One of the biggest problems they are facing is a lack of funding because not a lot of people believe that students are able to do something on this scale. In order to address this, they’ve decided to start to crowd source funds soon. Any help, from sharing this information to perhaps even contributing, would be greatly appreciated!
