Our Queer Realities: Intersecting Identities

From January 28th to February 1st, the UW will be host to a week-long series
of events high-lighting folks who identify with multiple identities. The
week will feature the awesome undocuqueer artists Julio Salgado and Yosimar
Reyes, as well drag artists from the greater Seattle community, including a
Drag 101 workshop with the fabulous Isabella de la Rosa. The week culminates
with a big Queer Talent Show!, featuring UW students
alongside professional drag performers.

Come! Bring the fam!

Join us for our annual Speed Dating event! GPSS will host two evenings of
drinks, dating, and fun. Both events will be held in Gould

2. Science Communication Workshops
“What exactly do you do?” Are you stumped when people ask you this
question? Do you have difficulty explaining your research to
non-scientists? Want to know how to communicate the importance of your
research to policy-makers? Maybe you have been invited to a Lobby Day
event but want to know how to translate your research a into language that
others will understand? The GPSS is offering two opportunities to learn
how to COMMUNICATE YOUR SCIENCE EFFECTIVELY: January 29th from 5-6pm in the
Vista Cafe or 2-3pm on February 5th in the HUB room 334. We had so much
interest we are offering it twice. Hope to see you there!

3. Lobby Day; Friday, Feb 15th, 9am-5pm
State funding for the UW has dropped by about 50% since 2009. This has led
to a pay freeze for faculty and staff, large hikes in graduate tuition,
cuts to financial aid, and less funds available for TA positions. But you can
help reverse this trend. Once a year students from across campus come
together and travel to Olympia to tell our legislators why higher education
is so important. Lobby Day 2013 is on Friday, February 15th, and GPSS will
provide transportation and food for the day. There will also be a student
poster session at the Capitol. To reserve your spot on the bus (and get
free lunch) you need to register by February 8th. Register at
www.tinyurl.com/huskiesonthehill2013. If you have any questions, contact
Brian Moe at gpssorgd.

5. GPSS Diversity Committee Networking Opportunity:

what sort of diversity efforts are happening within your department, school
or on-campus? If you have a diversity committee within your school or
department please send Kristen Hosey, the GPSS Secretary (gpsssec)
with their information so that we can reach out to them and try to network
diversity groups across campus.

Design Help Desk, operating Winter Quarter

Dear Professor Creager,

My name is Jason Petz, and I am writing to let you know about the "Design Help Desk" – a new tutoring service offered by the Division of Design in the UW School of Art.

The Design Help Desk offers free advice to both undergraduate and graduate students seeking to improve their visuals for presentation and publication. Earth and space science students will be able to get help on their figures, diagrams, data plots, presentations, and posters.

You may be interested in this UW Today article about the Design Help Desk:http://www.washington.edu/news/2012/02/21/design-eye-for-the-science-guy-drop-in-clinic-helps-scientists-communicate-data/. Last year the Design Help Desk was focused on helping science students, as part of an NSF-funded study. This year, we are able to help students from any discipline.

This Winter quarter, the Design Help Desk operates every Thursday from 3-5 pm in Room Red C, Research Commons, Allen Library South (http://uw.edu/maps/?alb). The consultants are graduate students from the UW Design Division.

Two faculty members are responsible for the Design Help Desk: Karen Cheng (Division of Design, UW School of Art) and Marco Rolandi (UW Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering). Funding for the Design Help Desk has been provided by the UW Division of Design and the UW College of Engineering.

I have attached a flyer to this email that I hope you will distribute and display. Please do not hesitate to contact me with further questions. I can be reached at petz.

Thank you!
