Dear Professor Robert Winglee,
My name is Kerim Tuncer SARIKAVAK and I am head of General Directorate of
Mineral Research and Exploration (MTA) Marine and Environmental Researches
Department. Established as the geological survey of Turkey in 1935, MTA
conducts not only land researches but also marine researches since 1976.
After the retirement of MTA SISMIK-1 research vessel, contract of new
research vessel, which is 90 meters long, 22 meters wide and is able to
conduct 3D seismic researches, has been recently signed. Moreover, shallow
marine researches are carried out with R/V MTA SELEN, which is 20 meters
Since the new seismic vessel is going to start working in the first days
of 2015, and our department needs well educated, experienced scientists.
In this context, General Directorate of MTA is enthusiastic to provide
full scholarship for its earth scientists for studying a master degree on
ocean sciences, seismic stratigraphy/sequence stratigraphy, sedimentary
geochemistry and climate.
As the head of department, I would like to know that if engineers from MTA
provide sufficient GRE and TOEFL scores, being a sponsored student meets
the deficits of GPA requirements. Moreover, our department wishes to send
all three (or at most five) scientists with full scholarship to the same
university in order to be educated in the same ecol, so is it possible for
the personnel who are awarded with scholarship to be accepted in
University of Washington Department of Earth and Space Sciences?
In addition to this, I also would like to know whether University of
Washington Department of Earth and Space Sciences has training program
about the subjects mentioned above or not, if so, what are the
requirements for attending these programs and the expense of these
I hope to hear from you soon.
Kerim T. SARIKAVAK
Head of Marine and Environmental Researches Department
General Directorate of MTA – Ankara
